Overview
In this interview Jeanette tells of her nurses training and career. She became the Principal Nurse at Riverton Hospital in 1977 and remained in this position until 1997. She explains some of the initiatives she introduced which included: patients dressing during the day, visits from the local Playcentre, a cat and dog, making better use of staff resources through changes to shifts. She goes on to tell of efforts to stop the closing at various times. Jeanette had a 39 year career in nursing.

Overview
Irene Brown was born in Riverton in 1901. Her father worked on a water race and her mother was a dressmaker. In this interview, Irene recalls the deaths of two of her brothers, school days at Wild Bush and growing up in rural Southland. She describes marrying Henry Brown and activities on their farm including keeping bees, cows, chickens and growing potatoes. She discusses clothing, going to town in a gig, horses and boating at Riverton.

This interview was recorded as part of the About Us Voices of Southland collection. Jane has lived all her life in Southland and in this interview she tells of her family history; her involvement in mutton birding, the preparation required to go to the Islands and life there. In 1989 Jane was elected to the Ngai Tahu Trust Board which later became Te Rununga o Ngai Tahu. She discusses the settlement results, involvement in conservation projects in Southland and Maori heritage and culture.
